First things first, if you're experiencing uncomfortable or irritated skin, definitely head to your dermatologist for some expert advice.
The phrase 'sensitive skin' is one that gets used a lot. In fact, a report by Aveeno found that 71% of adults identify as having sensitive skin. But since this skin type is even more prone to flakiness and clogged pores, exfoliating sensitive skin the right way is super important.
What causes sensitive skin
Illinois board-certified dermatologist Jessie Cheung, MD told Allure that "sensitive skin is skin that is more reactive than usual." This can be due to a myriad of factors—from an underlying condition such as eczema to an allergic reaction caused by an overly fragranced Body Wash.
When exposed to an irritant, the nerve endings in the top layer of the skin act up, leading to:
- Redness
- Itchiness
- Flakes
- Tightness and discomfort
The full causes of sensitive skin aren't fully understood, but it is generally considered to be due to a weakened, more easily damaged skin barrier.
Some common culprits:
- Over exfoliating—harsh scrubs, intense body brushes, or exfoliating acids can disrupt the skin barrier.
- Actives in certain skincare products—retinol, lactic acid, and acne-fighters can all exacerbate sensitivity.
- Fragranced skincare products or detergents—scented body washes, soaps, lotions, or detergents are a common irritant.
- Sun exposure
How to gently exfoliate sensitive skin
If you've got sensitive skin, the gentler the better when it comes to cleansers and especially exfoliants.
- Opt for a soft, flexible physical exfoliator like one of Boie’s Body or Face Scrubbers. This style of silicone-like scrubber can gently lift away flakes without disrupting the skin barrier.
- Pair it with a body wash for sensitive skin and scrub gently in circular motions, not applying too much pressure.
- Follow right out of the shower with a fragrance-free lotion that has skin barrier-supportive ingredients.
Skincare tip: Washcloths, plastic loofah poufs, and natural loofahs can be abrasive, harbor bacteria, and worsen irritation.
How often should you exfoliate sensitive skin?
If you have sensitive skin, dermatologists recommend exfoliating no more than 1–2 times per week. With gentle tools like Boie’s scrubbers, you might be able to exfoliate more regularly without irritation—but always listen to your skin. If it’s acting up, put down the scrubber.

Gentle but effective
Having found loofahs and scrubbing cloths often irritate my sensitive skin, I was delighted by how gentle, yet effective these scrubbers are. They rinse clean easily and dry quickly. I'm very pleased.

Good product, works well
I love the face scrubber. I have very sensitive skin and I get nervous using exfoliating face washes. The face scrubber leaves my skin feeling very nice and clean, but not irritated.
